Introducing Brock Davis and The “Wildlife” Guitar Strap

November 24th, 2009

If Zoolander were talking about multi-media artist Brock Davis, we’re sure he’d say “he’s so hot right now”. Brock won “Newcomer Of The Year” on the hip indie t-shirt design site threadless.com we users vote for their favorite artist’s work to be made into t-shirts and the artists get up to a couple grand for the honor. Brock has had something like 14 designs turned into shirts and many of them are in multiple printings and sold out. He also just does cool work:

Our favorite is his “Wildlife: antlers” design featuring a deer and the words “Wildlife” in spelled in the horns. We guess we’re not the only ones who liked it, it’s been on various musicians including:
Isles and Glaciers, Ra Ra Riot! , The Duke Spirit, and Jay Reatard

in fact Jay wears it in his video here:

Sublime Reunites At Smokeout Festival and Eric is Still Wearing His Couch Guitar Strap!

November 24th, 2009

Our friend Dave just emailed us yesterday this Youtube screencap of Sublime bass player Eric Wilson wearing a Brown and Orange Racer X Couch Guitar Strap in front 30,000 plus people at Cypress Hill’s Smokeout Festival on October 24 in San Bernardino, California.

Nice!

We had heard a number of years ago Eric had purchased one for his bass at World of Strings here in Long Beach, probably around the time he was playing with the Long Beach Dub All Stars, but we didn’t know he was still wearing it, or, for that matter wearing it the other week with a reformed Sublime at The Smokeout Festival on October 24 in San Bernardino, California. The festival also featured performances from Kottonmouth Kings, Slipknot, Deftones, Bad Brains and Pennywise.

Below is the actual video of them performing their mega-hit “What I Got” here that’s pretty awesome. We grew up in Long Beach so we saw the original band back in the day at so many small clubs and house parties and they really were great for their time. What’s crazy about this video is this kid “Rome” who is filling in for the departed Brad Nowell really is amazing and even weirder, he REALLY reminds us of a young Brad in is mannerisms, build and just how he looks in general.

Another interesting thing about this song “What I Got” is that the acoustic guitar solo made Rolling Stone Magazines‘ “100 Best Guitar Solos of All Time” list and was credited to Brad Nowell, but it was actually performed by part time member and full time manager and Skunk Records founder Miguel Happoldt. Miguel actually has a studio here behind us at Couch is and is a cool guy. He rocks a “i am 8 Bit” Couch Strap on his Telecaster.

In any event, it’s a shame to see that there seems to be some wrangling over the use of the name “Sublime” with a new singer. A quick watch of this video and it just seems like everyone enjoying hearing the music so much, band and audience. Let the guys keep the name please- or at least just use another version of it, but keep playing!

Upcycling Is The New Recycling? Glad There’s a Name For It!

November 17th, 2009

The other day our designer friend Jay from Whodini Handbags asked us if we knew what the word “upcyling” meant. He said he was seeing the word a lot on that indie-designer craft super site etsy.com and was curious about its meaning.

Photobucket
Upcycled Guitar Straps, pictured above from left to right: Vintage 80’s Mercedes Upholstery Straps in Red, Beige, Blue, and Brown, Ford Mustang Plaid Trunk Liner Guitar Straps, and on the very end “Brady Bunch” vintage recycled furniture upholstery vinyl.

It’s always good to start with Wikipedia on stuff like this so we opened up our iphone and took a look to find that upcyling involves the “re-use of a product with crippled functionality for alternative purposes, to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce energy usage, reduce air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from landfilling) by reducing the need for “conventional” waste disposal, and lower greenhouse gas emissions as compared to virgin production, with the intent of creating a product of higher quality design and artistic value.”

Nice! We’ve been doing that all along here at Couch Guitar Straps with our vintage vinyl straps, glad to know there’s a name for it! We took a look further around the web and it seems like it’s everywhere, even modern design leaders Dwell Magazine are in on the action declaring “Upcyling is the New Recyling” recently on dwell.com. Cool we’ll take it.

We first got this idea back in the early 2000’s when we were roaming through this old automotive upholstery warehouse where there were just tons of old 30 and 40 year old vinyl just sitting around gathering dust, most probably never to be used again. We mean, only so many people are going to reupholster their 1982 Volkswagen Rabbit bucket seats or that Brady Bunch sofa you grandmother had really isn’t going to get re-upholstered with that same neon green flowered vinyl is it?

Since then we’ve turned tons of vintage deadstock vinyls that probably would still be still sitting on the shelf in another 30 years into some pretty cool guitar straps including our Black Victorian Byloos Guitar Strap (with the Brady Bunch neon yellow backing), our Vintage Green Vines Strap made of an old vintage furniture vinyl, and our kick ass 80’s Mercedes Vintage Guitar Straps and 60’s Ford Mustang Trunk Liner Straps.

We have to admit though Jay really got us to thinking about how we could upcycle in new and different ways at Couch beyond just sourcing materials. As a vertically integrated design company that also manufactures our guitar straps, we realized we have A LOT of strap vinyl laying around- raw pieces, cut pieces, sewn strapping of less-than-guitar-strap length, you get the idea. What could we make with all this stuff that otherwise might get stored or thrown away?

Hey man, some trends are good and for a good reason and we’re down with upcycling at Couch, so we’ve introduced our Couch Beta Camera Strap, and
our Couch Slimline Wallet because like Wikipedia says, we’re always looking for new ways to “prevent waste of potentially useful materials [and] reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials”.

Upcylcing is cool, especially when you get to make your girlfriend a cool camera strap for her Canon Rebel EOS camera or a cool recycled (upcycled you say!) racing stripe wallet for your friend Rueben, or for that matter, for all our friends at Couch. The future is this way. Upcycle. Rock. Couch.

Silversun Pickups perform “Panic Switch” on David Letterman

August 2nd, 2009

A long time ago we saw And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead performing live on The David Letterman Show and after a less-than-enthralling performance, Dave stood up and literally said “Gentlemen, don’t quit your day jobs”. It didn’t sound to us like he was kidding.

The Silversun Pickups got entirely the opposite effect recently after performing their new single “Panic Switch” on Late Night with David Letterman. Their song and performance is great, and David SURELY agrees. It’s a joy to watch him freak out at the end, he’s clearly digging it. The drumming rules too and Dave makes sure to say so. Thanks Nikki for still wearing your Couch Skullphone Vegan Guitar Strap too, you rule.

How To Attach A Guitar Strap To An Acoustic Guitar

July 23rd, 2009

We get a lot of questions about whether our guitar straps will work with acoustic guitars, and the answer is yes, Couch Vegan Guitar Straps, any guitar straps for that matter work with acoustic guitars. The question arises because many acoustics have only one “button” on the back side of the guitar to attach to a strap, but none on the the front side.

Basically all you need is a piece of string, a shoe string works fine, and you use this to connect the front of your strap the the headstock of your beautiful new Taylor Guitar (or our old junky Fender solid top we keep around the office pictured here)  and you’re ready to go.

If you buy a strap from us, and you need to attach it to an acoustic, just put in the comments section at time of order that you need the “acoustic string” and we’ll try to throw one in for you for free.

In any event, here’s some quick pics to go with a more detailed explanation on how to do this. Yes it’s really easy:-)

Start by taking your string, about 25 to 30 inches works will give you extra, and running through the keyhole on the front of your strap. Tie a knot close to the hole.

run your string through the front tab and tie a knot just below, you can even go closer than the one here.

Next run one side of the string through the headstock of your guitar and tie a knot on the other side.

run one side of the string through the headstock of your acoustic guitar

run one side of the string through the headstock of your acoustic guitar

tie a know on the end. you can cut off the extra string if you'd like

tie a knot on the end. you can cut off the extra string if you'd like

That’s about it, basically just attach the back to the back button on the guitar and you’re ready to go. Again we use a special waxed string often used in making beaded necklaces, but any thing will do as long as it’s thin enough to fit under your strings at the headstock. Easy!

Cool pics of the Blue Deadstock Flowers Strap

July 8th, 2009

We love it at  Couch is when our customers send in their own pictures of their Couch Guitar Strap with their favorite guitars. We just got this one in today from Santa Monica’s Bryan K:DanomasterBryanKonietzko600 it’s a great shot of our Blue Deadstock Flowers Guitar Strap with his Dan-O-Master Danocaster Vintage Replica Guitar. Bryan actually posted this on the Gearpage.net site and let us know. Wow those Danocasters sure are nice guitars too! They are hand made in Nashville and look beautiful.

A lot of people email us to ask if Couch Guitar Straps will work with their acoustic guitar. The answer is yes, we usually just send you an extra string when you request it and you use that to tie around the headstock of your guitar from the front tab of the strap. Jenny K. from Berlin, Germany send us this pic of her blue acoustic guitar, it looks like an Ovation, with her Couch Blue Deadstock Flowers strap.

JennyKunjappuBlueFlowers03Wow nice! If you notice on these pics there is a little red line around the edges of these straps. This vintage deadstock vinyl actually appears to be red, and then coated and texturized with with mettalic blue flower victorian pattern. We guess this stuff is from the mid 1980’s from the textile style of it. We bought the very last of the vinyl at an old warehouse and have about 185 or so total straps in the entire run before they’re gone. If you have a blue guitar, these could look really great!

Incidentally if you don’t know already, those Danocaster Guitars and some others like many Gibson Les Pauls have a nitro-lacquer finish that can react to a lot of things- blood, alcohol, sweat, the rubber on many guitar stands and wall mounts, leather guitar straps and vinyl guitar straps too. Basically if you have a nitro lacquered guitar, just keep it in the case when you’re not using it, that’s what many owners manuals like Gibson largely suggest, and you’ll be fine.

New Ford Mustang Vinyl!

June 25th, 2009

We were at an old upholstery shop in L.A.’s Southbay area and ran into these cool looking rolls of vinyl:

Vintage Ford Mustang vinyl

Vintage Ford Mustang vinyl waiting to be Couch Belts and Guitar Straps

They reminded us of  vintage plaid suit material and we noticed a small swatch of it stapled to the wall that said “Mustang and Cadillac Trunk Liner“. It was a done deal because that’s where Couch Guitar Straps is headed anyway- we love making vegan products out of found and recycled materials and we love when it’s vintage automotive upholstery materials like our  80’s Mercedes Guitar Straps. So here’s a chance to add Ford Mustang to the list, and the material looks great, so yeah we bought it all up.

One other thing we always wanted to do is make a vegan belt and a guitar strap out of the exact same vintage found deadstock vinyl (and maybe something else like a vegan wallet too).  So here they are: The Ford Mustang Trunk Liner Guitar Strap and the Ford Mustang Trunk Liner Belt.

Mustang Strap on Sunburst Telecaster

We’ve been wearing the belt most days for the last couple months and are digging it. The strap is cool too. Like the belt, this mellow black and blueish grey plaid print goes with a lot of guitars, everthing from Reuben’s Purple Fender Telecaster to classic Sunburst colors found in tons of guitars from Gibson Les Paul and Paul Reid Smith Guitars to this nice dark-edged sunburst Fender Telecaster Guitar below. This shot was sent in by Tim Wildsmith of Deitze Music of Omaha and Lincoln Nebraska . Thanks Tim! We can take pictures all day long of our own stuff, but always most fun to see our stuff with other people’s nice gear. Next up is the Mustang Wallet:-) It’s just in prototype stages and we’re not sure when we can go into production on these, but the material sure makes a great looking recycled vegan wallet doesn’t it?!

one day we'll sell these too for now though there's a belt and strap you know!

New Silversun Pickups Video Out, Nikki Wears Her Skullphone Guitar Strap

May 4th, 2009

Los Angeles’ Silversun Pickups just released their record Happy Swoon and in their new video for their song Panic Switch, stylish Silversun bass guitar player Nikki Monninger continues to rock her Limited Edition Artist Series Skullphone Guitar Strap! You can see her with her strap right about 1:39 into the video:

Nikki first got that strap sometime back in 2007 when underground Skullphone street artist Spazmat gave it to her as a gift. It cool to see that Nikki’s still getting a lot of use out of it two years later as these guys have been on near constant world festival and concert tours ever since.

We decided to do a quick Google Image Search and, we must say, from the looks of these pics it’s hard to imagine anyone rocking skulls more elegant than Nikki:

If you haven’t heard the band, they sound about smart as Nikki looks. Something like the very early Smashing Pumpkins, Gish record mixed in with more good early 90’s shoegaze. The band is currently touring in support of their new record in the US, and leaves for Europe in early July. The Silversun Pickups new record Happy Swoon is available on Dangerbird Records.

By the way, these Skullphone Guitar Straps are almost gone, there are a couple in black and a few in brown. We are not sure when and if we will be making more, so get them while you can.

New Wilco Video Out, Nels Cline Wears His Couch Strap

May 2nd, 2009

Tim W. From Deitze Music in the Omaha emailed us the other day to mention that “Avante-Guitarist” Nels Cline is wearing his Couch  Guitar Strap in the brand new Wilco  movie/DVD “Ashes of American Flags” (Nonesuch Records)!

The movie, about  ”American’s Best Live Band” (NPR), won “Best Cinematography” at The Big Sky Film Festival too:

ahesofamericanflags1

Nels’ main guitar is this old black Fender Jazzmaster (maybe Jaguar), he’s playing it in almost every shot with a black and white Racer X!

Wilcos Nels Cline with Couch Strap and Grolsch Straplocks

Wilco's Nels Cline with Couch Strap and Grolsch Beer strap-locks!

Is that a Grolsch Beer Bottle Strap lock on Nels’ Guitar!? Didn’t we just do a post on those last week?! (see below). That’s great.

And look at the finish on that guitar! Man he gets some mileage out of his gear.

How long does a Couch Strap last anyway? As far as we know, Nels got that Black and White Racer X Guitar Strap from Ken at True Tone Music in Santa Monica at least 4 or 5 years ago. We decided to do a quick Google Image Search to see what showed up, and, as you can see, we found tons of great shots. Looks like Nels is getting some serious mileage out of his Couch strap: nelscline3

nelscline_solo_large nels3 nels-cline-2

nice!

Nels’ career of course began long before Wilco. Here’s some stuff from his Wikipedia Page:

“Cline has performed on over 150 albums in the jazz, pop, rock, and experimental pop music genres. Cline has also performed and recorded with punk rock hero Mike Watt in his touring bands, as well as with members of Sonic Youth and country music legend Willie Nelson, and in the jazz/punk/improv band Banyan with Watt and ex-Jane’s Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins. He continues to expand his audience as a member of the Grammy-winning rock band Wilco, which he joined in early 2004. He was later featured in the cover story of Guitar Player Magazine for his newfound collaboration with the band. In February, 2007, Cline was chosen by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the Top 20 New Guitar Gods given the title “The Avant Romantic”.

A Free Beer With Every Straplock!?

May 1st, 2009

This is well known in some circles and less in others, but did you know that the little red washers used on ceramic Grolsch Beerbottletops work excellent as strap locks?

 grolschstraplock12

We at Couch Guitar Straps like them because we’re not really that into drilling into our guitars, or for that matter spending the money on strap locks.

We first heard about this from the Kyle Tomkins Blog.  Kyle is a guy from Blackouteffectors.com who make great boutique guitar effects. He was trying out macro shots on a new Sony A100 camera and decided to do some shots of  his home-made strap locks and our  now-sold-out Deadstock Flowers Vintage Vinyl Guitar Strap:

Another friend said an old roadie of the Eagles or something told him about it. Anyway, we tried it out and these thing work great, plus Grolsch is pretty good beer.
